Commonly Asked Questions About RedPoint Indoor Climbing
I am new to Rock Climbing. Will someone be available to teach me how and what to do when I come?
RedPoint does not provide on-staff coaching or clinics at all times. When you come, we will unfortunately not have anyone available to work with you and teach you how to rock climb unless you pre-schedule a private lesson or take a scheduled class. We do, however, provide belay classes and climbing clinics throughout the week. To see our climbing class schedule, follow this link.
What does “bouldering” mean?
Bouldering refers to the style of rock climbing that does not involve the use of ropes. RedPoint allows climbers to boulder up to the height restriction of 12 feet.
Who can boulder at RedPoint? Am I required to take a class?
Anyone, as long as you have a signed waiver (Anyone under 18 MUST have a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian)! No class is required to boulder. We do ask that you utilize crash pads and a spotter for your safety in case you fall. You are not required to take a class to begin bouldering at RedPoint.
What does “top roping” mean and who can do it?
Top rope is rock climbing with ropes. In order to top rope in our facility, you MUST have an individual who is belay qualified from RedPoint to belay you. Unfortunately, RedPoint does not provide belayers unless you pre-schedule with us two weeks in advance. You must provide your own belayer (i.e., bring a friend or ask a friendly member).
What does “belay” mean and who can be qualified to do it at RedPoint?
Belaying is a technique used to safely control the rope and the climbing equipment to ensure the climber at the other end of the rope is safe. RedPoint requires that all individuals must take the belay qualification class before being allowed to belay in the facility. You must be 14 years of age or older to take the class. Again, RedPoint does not provide belayers unless you pre-schedule with us two weeks in advance. You must provide your own belayer (i.e., bring a friend or ask a friendly member).
I learned how to belay: in the military, at the Climbing Place, etc…
RedPoint takes safety as it’s number one priority. Unfortunately, many belay techniques have been statistically deemed unsafe for various reasons. Because of this, RedPoint only allows ONE belay technique to be used in our facility, which is recommended by the American Mountain Guide Association. Therefore, we require all individuals take our belay qualification class unless you can prove that you know and can effectively use the belay technique that we allow in our facility.
What equipment do I need to bring and what should I wear?
You do not need to bring any equipment. RedPoint provides black crash pads (large portable mats that provide extra cushion to help break your falls!). You may also bring or rent climbing shoes and a harness. We recommend that you wear comfortable clothing that allows you full range of movement to climb in.
I have all of my own equipment. Can I use it?
You may use your own climbing shoes and harness, however, for the safety and well-being of our climbers, you are required to use all of the ropes, belay devises, and carabiners provided by our facility unless you have the consent of one of RedPoint’s managers.
How can I lead climb at RedPoint?
You must pre-schedule a lead climb test-out with one of our managers or take one of our lead climbing classes offered at various times throughout the year. Please call 910.868.ROCK (7625) for more details.
